A History of the CMC Zawiercie S.A. Scrap Subsidiaries ( Scrapena S.A. and Centrozlom Katowice Sp. z.o.o.) Centrozlom Katowice traces its start back to July, 1945 when the State of Poland opened up a scrap collection and processing depot named “ Collecting Center 1.” In July, 1948 its name was changed to “ Centrozlom Katowice.” Scrapena in Herby was established and started operations on November, 1948. Both scrap collection and processing yards initially had no scrap processing equipment and all scrap preparation was performed manually by torch or sledge hammer. In 1952 Scrapena purchased four (4) hydraulic balers and by 1956 487 people were employed. Scrapena had further technological innovations: 1. 1968 six (6) hydraulic balers were operational. 2. 1972 first hydraulic shear becomes operational. 3. 1985 Lindeman 1200 ton shear is commissioned with 100,000 ton annual production. 4. 1992 a 2,000 HP Lindeman Kondurator/ shredder start up and at the time is the most modern shredder in Poland . 1988 Scrapena sets an all time production record of 648,000 tons of scrap processed and shipped with a monthly production rate of 50,000 plus tons. They carried a scrap inventory of 240,000 tons. The 1990’s in Poland brought great change to the Polish Scrap Industry. The transition from a planned socialist economy to a market based economy meant Scrapena and Centrozlom Katowice government controlled scrap collection and processing facilities no longer received their unprocessed scrap from Polish industries under fixed long term contracts. Now both yards had to compete with private and state owned scrap yards for their unprocessed scrap. 1993-1996 saw both yards expand the scope of their scrap collection activities to the following locations: Centrozlom- Katowice to Zebiec and Rybnik. Scrapena to Czestochowa, Lubliniec, Polichno,Tuszyn,Kalisz, Chelm, Wloclawek, Rzeszow, Opole, Lublin and Chrzanow. All facilities started to utilize containers to facilitate scrap collection. Centrozlom Katowice in July, 1996 and Scrapena in January, 1997 became direct subsidiaries of Impexmetals and Huta Zawiercie, their principle scrap supplier. 2001 Centrozlom Katowice becomes ISO 9000 certified. Dec.,2003 CMC Zawiercie S.A. takes over direct management responsibilities of both yards and in 2004 a comprehensive investment plan to modernize and expand the volume of scrap handled at all facilities. Today Scrapena has yards at the following locations in Poland : 1. Czestochowa (2) 2. Lublin 3. Chrzanow 4. Herby- Headquarters Centrozlom Katowice has yards located presently in Poland at: 1.Zebiec 2. Katowice (Janow)- Headquarters Their present scope of technical and commercial activity includes: 1. Purchase, collection, processing, and sales of scrap iron and steel. 2. Purchase and sales of non-ferrous metals. 3. Brokerage of ferrous scrap to CMC Zawiercie S.A 4. Both scrap subsidiaries of CMC Zawiercie S.A. are always seeking new and increased levels of cooperation with scrap dealers and industrial scrap generators.
